Ready the breakwater for the new port of Veracruz
With an investment close to 3 billion pesos, this Magna engineering work was concluded that will start a new historical stage for the Port of Veracruz
The history of the artificial port of Veracruz has the rhythm of the sea, a swing of events, failures, periods of storm and days of glory. Its origin dates back to August 10, 1882 when the first stone was placed during the administration of Don Domingo Bureau. At that time three Mexican companies would try to build it without success.
In 1895 the administration of Porfirio Diaz achieved a balance of the public budget, and with it, a healthy environment in financial matters. Under this shelter, foreign investment resulteded and invested in infrastructure. The port case was no exception: its construction was concession to the English businessman named Weetman Dickinson Pearson.
The artificial port was inaugurated on March 6, 1902 by the same President Porfirio Díaz. In a ceremony "made an opening act, he read it and said: open today and forever the port of Veracruz," says the historian Veracruz, Ricardo Cañas.
This Magna work of engineering, in recent times was rebased. There was talk of limited growth, of the lack of space to receive new generation vessels – ships up to 400 meters, compared to those of 60 meters that arrived in their early years −, as well as to expand their capacity, so they faced a sat Uración of various types of cargo in containers and automobiles.
And so began a new stage of which we have current news, as it was announced the conclusion of the work to conceive the largest breakwater in Latin America, 4.3 kilometers long.
The function of the breakwater is to create a calm area so that the boats can dock, said Jorge Enrique Baños, deputy manager of development and project execution of the Integral port administration of Veracruz. It was built of stone, with rocks of 20 kilos to 200 in the core layer; The biggest ones are three and a half tonnes. In addition, concrete was employed to act as a breastplate.
Its construction required an investment close to 3 billion pesos and is part of a great engineering and logistics work, as they mobilized 10 million cubic meters of stone, which involved handling up to 27000 trucks a day.
With the conclusion of the breakwater and once they are delivered to the concessionaires the areas gained to the sea and berthing the first ship, at the end of June, the new port of Veracruz will start a new cycle as it will have increased its load capacity of 28 million Tonelad As a 95 million of tonnes per annum and will also have 35 berths and two docks of Ciaboga.
